i bought a laptop battery off the internet...

and its lasted only 2 weeks. does this mean dont buy batteries off the internet or theres something i need to do to get my laptop to work independent of a powersource.
its an acer laptop 4100 travelmate incidentally

a decent battery should give 1.5 hrs upward (depending what you are doing)

Who did you buy it from? If you bought it in the UK from a trader you should be entitled to a refund.

thanx for speedy replies. actually acthetroll, i was getting 4hours from the battery every day until it packed in. what had happened, was i�d gone away for 4 days, without my laptop. and on my return i discovered it wasnt working. tried several times to charge it for 6 & 12 hours, but it made no difference, cuz as soon as i disconnected from the mains, it wud shut down.
the seller on ebay is adamant that his batteries are normally ok, and hes worried about negative feedback.

If he's that worried about feedback he should give you a full refund ASAP.
If he doesn't play ball, claim through PayPal, assuming you paid that way.

When asking PayPal for a refund, raise an 'item not as listed' dispute and follow the on-screen instructions. It is very easy and PayPal is always on the side of the buyer so you will encounter no difficulty from that quarter. However, they will advise you to contact your supplier in the first instance and see what he has to offer, but they will see the dispute through for you, all you need to do is sit back and wait for the refund to appear in your account. Easy peasy.

I still think the trader should be given the option to exchange.Their reputation could be tarnished and then piggy will still need another battery from somewhere anyway.Batteries can have faults like anything else, so i think the trader should be given the opportunity to exchange and then he can return it as faulty to the manufacturer.No need for the negative feedback then either.

DaisyMae, that is not quite the full story.

Paypal may find in the buyer's favour, or they may not. There is no guarantee on that score.

If they do find in the buyer's favour then the buyer will very probably be required to return the item to the seller at the buyer's own expense. And the buyer would need to be able to prove to Paypal that the item has been returned via on-line tracking. So it is essential to use the correct method of return.

as i said b4, i�ve no intention in leaving bad feedback, unless the seller isnt helpful. all i can do is wait for his reply. i still think somehow its a simple technical fault.
for all you technos, the battery amber light is always on, but the battery ikon for hours remaining has disappeared.

Rollo did you know that sellers cannot leave negative feedback, only buyers can, and PayPal often don't wait for proof of return, they tend to take the buyer's word for it. I have been a seller for quite some time and have come up against unscrupulous buyers who claim all sorts to get both the item and their money back. I have left ebay for that reason, there is no fairness in the treatment of sellers.

And I agree with you about buyers now being favoured over sellers on ebay transactions.

However, there is still no guarantee how Paypal will decide things in any given case.

Try leaving the thing charging for longer - I've had mobile phones/batts revive that way, after initially seeming dead. A more controlversial way is to dischagrge almost completely by connecting, say, a torch bulb or small electric motor across the terminals, then attempt to recharge it fuilly.

I'd get a second opinion. take it to a tech and have the current draw measured. you need to know if it really is faulty.
