During a recent cruise I slept like a top and noticed that there was a memory topper about 3 inches thick on top of the mattress. Since returning home I am back to uncomfortable bed and pillow , thus not sleeping too well. Our mattress will need replacing in the next couple of years and I was wondering about other people's experiences with memory foam.Do I get a topper now and have to replace the mattress later, or are the mattresses that good - also the pillows?
Any advice and help on manufacturer etc. greatly received.

I've got a 2" topper, but you need quite a good mattress for it to go on. if you buy just the topper, you need to consider your (and your partners') weight and the depth/ firmness of topper you may need.

if your mattress has had it you may as well look into a new memory foam mattress instead of just the topper.

I don't like memory foam pillows as I find thre's not enough "give" in them, but I found quite a soft one which is okay.

Thinking about one myself. I have been told that if you buy one that is compressed into a roll/box then you have to have it laid out flat for upto 24 hours prior to using so that it can get to its optimum shape. If I were you I would buy a mattress now as it will save you money in the long term.
Replace your mattress by all means but you can pick up good (Silent Night) mattress toppers for about 50 if you shop around. I know I couldn't live without mine now. All the aches and pains I used to wake up with in my hips and shoulders are long gone!
ive just bought a memory foam bed from argos and i have to say its great and ive never slept better.i suffer from back problems and hadnt slept properly for years but this bed has made a huge difference.there are alot of half price offers there at the moment so in my opinion it was well worth it..

They are very comfortable but also incredibly hot in warm weather if you or your OH get overheated in bed they may not be ideal. Perhaps counteract this effect by only using a very lightweight summer duvet.
I've heard a lot of people talk about memory foam being very warm/hot to sleep on. Either I've been extremely lucky or they have been unlucky but I haven't had a problem and - thank god for anonymity - my wife is going through the menopause and suffers really badly from hot flushes/sweats and doesn't seem unduly concerned about any 'heat' from the memory foam.
Like Krustyman we have never had a problem with feeling too hot but if you found it was a problem, as a previous post suggested use a lighter duvet. Can throughly recommend going the whole hog and buying a mattress. Money well spent in our opinion.
tj hughes do memory foam toppers

google their website
you can buy online

beware of overpriced overrated ones
Get a visco pro mattress. They have about 3inch foam on top of the springs. Very comfortable mattress. ive had mine 3 weeks and love it. was about 470 for kings size from paul simons beds
We got ours from - http://www.trusleep.com/ - we got the Airflow mattress that allows it to ventilate - memory foam matresses are warmer than ordinary mattresses, but you get acclimatised to them, and, after the first year you wont notice the diiference and will never want to sleep in another sprung mattress again.
Thank the Lord for MEMORYFOAM !!!!!! It has revolutionised sleep, no more hip or back pains. We used a mattress topper for a few years but found it shifted a bit each night and as they are pretty heavy and hard to move, bedmaking was a chore each day. When we needed a new mattress we thought we'd go the whole hog and get a full memory foam mattress but it was too much, we couldn't turn over, couldn't move and couldn't get up off it each morning (we resembled two beached whales !) So we have compromised and bought a firm mattress with a layer of memory foam incorporated, Success!! I also use a memory foam pillow, but have a regular one underneath as I need two. Again - success !!

If I were you Kazal, I'd push the boat out (not the cruise one) and go for it now, why wait and miss out on all that good sleep.
