They might also have a requirement to manually select the TV or laptop for viewing once connected. Look on your laptop for a 15 pin connection socket marked 'TV' . A suitable lead would have three phono type plugs on the other end, red, white, and yellow, to plug in to your TV's video inputs. Really, you need to refer to your laptop's manual
The 15pin port on a laptop is a VGA port, that will not let you run the signal through a TV unless you have a modern flatscreen TV with a matching VGA port on it, then you just need a standard PC monitor lead. (and a 3.5mm jack to 2 phonos for the audio)
if your laptop had a tv out it will probably be a small round port like this (possibly yellow in colour)

If you have one of these you can connect your laptop to any TV with a scart socket using suitable leads, be aware that this is a low quality video connection though and not suitable for day to day use, only for video and maybe games.

Do you have a port on your laptop like this:

If so, do you have the same one on the back of your TV?
If so, you need to go to any electronics stop (local radioshack or something), and ask for a VGA cable. You'll also need a cable for audio. Usually TVs accept phono audio input, so get a 3.5mm jack to male phono cable too.
However, if you have a HDMI port or DVI port (google them to see what they look like), these are far better than VGA ports.
