subwoofer connection query

all you tech minded guys out there , i have an amp which does dolby pro logic surround sound etc and have 5 speakers attached for that, the thing is i really want to put a subwoofer in and want to know is it ok to put a subwoofer with a single speaker wire into the speaker screw connection at the back of the amp or should there be a special port for the sub? i have speakers which have tri wire with subwoofer built in an thought i could use 1 speaker wire from the speaker into the connection at the back of the amp and just use the sub part of the speakers but tried all 3 of the connections on the speakers and nothing worked? can you help i am just a mere female so am limited? lol please advise as i really want a subwoofer but dont know what i need to get ?

make and model of the amp might have helped, but expect you will be out of luck, the amp is designed to be used in the configuration it is in at the moment, i.e. without a separate sub so the chances are there is no provision to add one.
Normally,all speakers are connected up with 2 wires (neg- and pos+) inc subwoofers,so if you only use 1 wire you won't be hearing any sound from it. You also didn't say if your SUB is active or passive?The former needs to be connected to the line level (usually a separate named port,as it will have an integral amp.).If it's the latter,it can be connected like another speaker,providing,as mentioned above,the amplifier can handle it,and remember ,if you are going to utilise it,you may have to upgrade your amp....but get someone who knows how,to do it.
