I remember seeing an aid for sketching which caused an image to be directed/reflected onto a sheet of paper.A periscope sort of thing on a small stand.

You then just took your pencil or crayon to the reflected image to produce an accurate sketch.

Does anyone recall this or is it just my imagination playing tricks?

I've seen this device in a large art supplies shop. They've been used by many artists over the years, and its called a Camera Lucida.

Here's a very brief history - http://www.rleggat.com/photohistory/history/cameralu.htm

and you can buy one here

That`s the very thing, Pinotage.  Why do we have to stop at only 3 stars for a rating?  Many thanks.
It is also now thought that quite few of the great masters used these devices to insure that they got the scale and perspective correct in their works. It was on a TV documentory not so long ago.
