If you cant touch them - how do you insert them into holders and what with. Thanks for any replies

hold them in a bit of kitchen roll, or a clean tea towel..

if they are GU10 You can get a small suction pad approx 35 mm dia to fix onto the glass from diy outlets then turn anti clockwise to remove you should not need to push up or pull down the worst bit is to locate the pins on renewal hth tez

In fact, the GU10 lamps have ordinary glass outers, so can be handled (cold). If you look inside the lamp you can see the separate halogen lamp which should not be touched and obviously cannot be anyway. The glass shroud carries the reflector silvering.
Halogen lamps for cars and projectors for instance often have the 'halogen' case exposed so should be handled as sara3 quite rightly suggested. If they are touched, a small amount of natural oil/grease from your fingers may be deposited and its presence will accelerate its deterioration when hot.

Others have suggested sensible methods to avoid touching the glass; it is also possible to insert the bulbs by holding the ceramic contact area at one end, and inserting with the help of a small screwdriver.

Grease (sweat) from your fingers, on the glass envelope causes a hot spot on the bulb, shortening its life.

Should you accidentally touch the glass – your sweat can be removed by wiping with paraffin or similar solvent. Clean off the solvent and allow to evaporate before switching the lamp on.
