Nothing Is Unbelievable Anymore.

We are having a 'discussion' at work! Was Deep Purples song 'Smoke on the Water' written because the studio they were recording in set alight (near lake Geneva?) or was it because a Rolling Stones gig they went to had a fire and the smoke drifted over the water? If it is not the Stones 'option' why do they sing about them in the song?
Thanks.

I think someone fired a flare gun or something, and set fire to the place. They moved to a different hotel and recorded their album in the Rolling Stones' Mobile Studio. One of them (Roy Glover I think) thought of the smoke on the water they had seen (the Casino was situated overlooking Lake Geneva).
