DVD's / CD's not playing

After a recent problem with Windows XP not loading on my PC i used the restore/recovery discs.

However i've now discovered that nothing is happening when i put a cd or dvd disc , in the disc drive
When i go into the power DVD , for example , and click play- a message says ' no disc in drive @ : '

Is there something that's missing or needs to be done ?

Any help would be appreciated
