Problem with Reebok 12403 i rower - help please

I have just bought a second hand rowing machine which works very well apart from the counter doesn't work -you can set it for say 60 rows but it never goes down in number, it just doesn't seem to count at all. It doesn't measure calories or anything but it all lights up so it's not the battery.
Anyone any idea if i'm doing something wrong?
