If I have a light with a single bulb of 40watt in one room and another in an adjacent room of 60watt and have them both on for say 10 hours; what would be the difference in pence between the cost of electricity used if I were to receive an electricity bill for this?

You are charged per unit, which is kilo Watt hours (kAh).  The difference in cost between 40W and 60W light bulbs will depend on the amount you are charged per unit.  If you're charged at 5p per kWh a 40W bulb will cost 0.0019 per hour and a 60W bulb will cost 0.0029 per hour.  (Yes, they are both less than 1p per hour.)

Kerris , this is my answer to a similar question recently posted.

One kilowatt is a thousand watts. if you put on ten lights, each of 100w (one hhundred watts), for an hour, then you consume one kilowatt.

If you know the wattage of an appliance then it is easy to figure your electricity consumption.

If your wondering what fuse you need for a particular appliance, a simple way is to divide the wattage by 240 (watts = volts x amps) or (amps = watts/volts).

A 1 kilowatt electric fire, for example, would need a fuse of just over 4 amps (i.e. 5 amp fuse).

re your new question a 40 watt lamp burning for 10 hours would consume 40 x 10 = 400watt-hours or 0.4 of 1kwh (0.4 of one unit of electricity). So using the 5p per unit suggested by Skids it would cost you 2 pence. Similarly a 60 watt lamp would cost you 3 pence. The difference in a 10 hour period is 1p.

Obviously you need to check what your paying per unit (from your bill), and you probably have standing (flat rate) charges as well.

Hope this answers your query.

Barely anything - it's the tv, washing machine, tumble dryer etc that consume the most.
