I dug out the MP3 player I bought last year to take on holiday with me and it was damp inside, the coily bit for the battery was all rusted and the on switch was also rusted. Got those bits clean and it's working again but the sound is very crackly, also the computer won't recognise it when it's plugged in (USB). Is there anything I can do or has it had it?

chances are the contacts in the earphone socket and USB port have corroded too. Try repeatedly plugging in and unplugging the connectors to see if that will clean them (and next time store your MP3 player somewhere dry)
