How do I ransfer Albums from laptop to ipod

I know next to nothing about Apple ipods, other than everyone says they are brill. I bought one two months ago to attach it to my Roberts Chronus 2 Dab clock radio with ipod docking. I have only just got round to "sorting" out the ipod.
I thought it would be like many things you attach to a PC, in that some kind of plug and play wizard would launch when the ipod was first connected to my laptop, and would then give me popular options, like copy music from my hard drive to the ipod. Seems it doesn't work quite that way.
I have now downloaded i-tunes, but still cannot workout how to get albums or individual tracks from the laptop to the ipod. My albums are played via windows media player. Does anyone know of a website that has an "idiot's" guide to copying music from PC to ipod? Maybe something which has either a step by step guide, or video tutorial. I know I am a dinosaur, and others find this a doddle. Given the millions sold, I suppose it must be! Help appreciated!
