cigarette smell ?

Since our new neighbours moved in about a year ago, I think there is a smell of cigarette smoke in our house all the time. OH cant smell it though but it seems to be in the lounge and bedrooms and quite strong. I know that the neighbours do smoke, so is it possible the smoke could permeate through the walls as there are times when all the doors and windows are closed. Its so annoying when you dont smoke yourself

Im not being ridiculous. Im quite serious. I cant think how else this smell can affect our house !

can you smell their food if they have maybe... curry? garlic? burnt toast?

it sounds very unlikely to me. get someone else to come in and have a sniff, and if it's just you who can smell it, it's probably best to talk to your doctor.

No, cant smell food of any sort. But if they were heavy smokers maybe. Is it possible to come through vents or whatever, even under the house through floorboards? I really dont know. It probably does sound ridiculous but its there !! And there is nothing wrong with my sense of smell Sara3 although there is with OH which is probably why she cant smell it

check to see if there are any pipes etc linking with next door there maybe gaps around them, we live in a flat above a man who smokes a lot and we got the smell of cigarettes in the kitchen it was rising through a gap where the fall pipe travelled down the length of the flats situated in the cupboard where the meters were we filled the gaps with a can of expandable foam,it stopped it.

How old is your house? If its modern and you have suspended timber floors then its possible that the smell is coming thru the flooring / skirting gap and into the floor void.

could it be travelling under the floor?
if you and they have wooden flooring - there could be drafts running between the houses.
We had a neighbour who used to cook the most foul smelling cabbage dishes - and it took me months to work out where it was coming from. We had floorboards and so did they.. and the smell was wafting up from there!

it wont be coming through the walls though!

course its likely you can smell it but more likely comeing through floors, under doors. Or if they have wondows open, which you hope they would if smoking inside then maybe getting through your open windows. I could often smell curry when living above the curry house so you are not being ridiculous

There have been cases where the dividing wall in the loft has been found to have many holes in it .So it might be that the smell is coming down .
I found this to be a case with car fumes filling the loft space and we could smell them everywhere.
Have a look/smell in your loft. It's worth a try .
You may even find lodgers up there . It actually happened several years ago.

Thanks all for your answers. At least some people understand my situation.
Neither me or my OH have ever smoked. Some friends came round this morning and they too could smell it but not as strong as I could. My OH still cant smell it. I`ll have to try to find out where its coming from cos I hate the smell. Its like when you walk behind someone whos smoking and it gets up yer nose. For those of us that dont smoke its annoying.

Most non-smokers dislike the smell of cigarettes, and smokers don't realise they honk of it.

Ignore the people who are telling you to get a life Burston.
It's really annoying when you can smell something you don't like and can't trace the origin, and where are you persecuting smokers? As far as I can see you are just trying to find out how to stop the smell coming in to your house.
I have a mate who has virtually no sense of smell, and he can never understand why I make such a fuss about certain smells, I don't choose to smell smoking smells, I don't even try to but I can smell cigarette smoke from a looong way off so I know how you feel. Obviously those who are knocking you either have a poor sense of smell or smoke themselves and just don't realise how annoying this is.
We had an intermittent sewage smell years ago (early 70s) which took weeks and weeks to find the source even though my parents had the council in many times. Are the knockers saying you should just ignore this??? I doubt that anybody would ignore any smell that was annoying to themselves.
