Sometimes it helps to pay off some debts, like your credit card or loan if you have one. Or at least increase the payments.

You can check your credit score with Equifax. There may be something on it that is not your fault, like a family member or house mate you've lived with. If there is, you can get Equifax to remove it from your file. that may also improve your credit score.

As well as Equifax there are at least 2 other major credit reference agencies, Experian and Ican't remember the name of the other. You have a right to access the information they hold on you, some of them work on the individual and some work on your postal Address, meaning that it may not be YOU that can't get credit, but your address, or someone living there, It is possible to have bad debtors removed from the address and a note of dissassociation attached to your credit file, the 2 companies mentioned are available online, and for a fee of about 2, you can have your credit file sent to you.

Or sometimes it is because you have had nothing on credit therefore a good credit rating is not possible.

Try dial-a-phone, they are usually in the daily star and they even let ME get one !

Best thing to do is check with one of the Credit Reference agencies - Equifax is the main one in the UK.

In my experience they are not the most polite people to deal with. But get your credit history - used to be about 2.50. Often there are mistakes on file which can be corrected.

there are a number of ways:

the 3 main credit reference agencies in the uk are: equifax, experian and callcredit plc... by law you can write to them all and ask for a copy of your credit report for about 2

however there is a much better way: www.creditexpert.co.uk is a service run by experian and they offer a 28 day free trial, where you can view your credit report as many times as you like... then simply cancel it before the trial ends.

equifax also allow you to buy your credit report to view online (much dearer but you do get to see it instantly whereas experian takes about a week) it costs about 11.75. see below:
