Not sure if anyone saw the original website for the book they were selling, i cant link (though i did see it) as its been withdrawn now.

But should amazon have been selling it in the first place?

I can only hope that this issue has been blown up out of all proportion and is now being misreported...............

If the facts 'are' as they appear to be, then Amazon should be ashamed to be promoting this book.

jth, the book was on sale up yesterday. I know countless people who complained, called bbc, called reporter friends and reported it to the Internet Watch Foundation too.

(this comes from friends of a friend of a friend) Amazons reply to the emails they received said

It would appear that they do not check what books are put up for sale. I don't believe for a minute that they would have allowed it had they known sooner.

Don't boycott Amazon because they sell dodgy books.

Boycott Amazon because they are driving High Street bookshops out of business !!

Hmmmm.............a bit slippery, that.

Amazons definition (as a supposedly responsible retailer) of censorship and mine are at variance, here. Refusing to sell an objectionable book is NOT censorship.

They have made a serious error..........I'd certainly be looking closely at whoever made this decision !!

ummmm, how can they not check? someone somewhere must install the details into their server. The synopsis and the title, the cover page.

i had an order to place with them for Christmas gifts, they wont be getting it now.

This is probably to do with lulu, a self publishing service run by Amazon.

I doubt Amazon look at every piece of nonsense they're asked to publish on print on demand.

Amazon have so many titles, they couldn't possibly vet them all.

But ... when a dodgy one comes to light, do they remove it? ... Yes, they do.

But I still only buy from Amazon if the bookshops can't get it ... like it's out of print, or something.

With Waterstones JJ - they're hardly helping.

The "long tail" in high street bookshops is pretty dead I think. At least Amazon can get you the books you want, whereas Waterstones... well... not much good for anything I find.

Also, the massive mismanagement of Boarders is partly to blame for our current high-street situation.

I won't stop buying from Amazon in the UK (mostly because it's the only place where I can get some books) but I certainly think that their US/Canadian arm - as per link - has made a serious error of judgement. The rights of everyone to publish don't mean that the content of what some people want to write SHOULD be published.
