Potterton Boiler Problem...
5 Answers
Please help...I have a Potterton Boiler Prima 40 b model (about 15 years old). The problem is that the control knob on the boiler will not run any higher than 3 1/2. Obviously the radiators are not getting hot at this low running temp and so the house never gets warm. If I do turn the boiler up to 4 or 5 then after an hour the boiler cuts out completely and has to be relit but it has to go back down to 3 1/2 again. So again we have a permanently cold house. Please someone help! Thank you....

The manual for the boiler suggests it is either the pump over-run thermostat, boiler thermostat or over heat thermostat.
If you follow the fault finding chart – you should be able to determine which is at fault.

You should be able to narrow the problem down to a particular component, but it may be difficult for you to obtain a replacement for the faulty bit, even if it is in effect an electrical rather than gas path issue, because many suppliers insist on selling gas appliance related parts only to licensed personnel. Therefore you may find that you have no option but to get the assistance of a registered technician - engineers deal with the wider infrastructure and are unlikely to be available to do this sort of thing, they do not generally deal with individual appliances or the public for that matter. They are also likely to be even more expensive than technicians.
Thank you for all the feedback. I've had someone proper to look at it, and also rang Potterton - apparently the problem is not easy to pin point and could be one of numerous things causing the problem...therefore can run into a LOT of money and it might still not work properly (trial and error) was just hoping someone had also experienced the exact fault. Will start on Hymie's suggestions first, but thanks to all.
