I'd say that was Venus.
It's the planet Venus.
... the ISS moves across the sky, much like you'd see a plane.
If you do a google search for 'stellarium', you can download this application and have a planeterium on your PC. Set your positon and adjust the date/time and find out what those objects are! It even has the orbits of the ISS and loads of other artificial satellites.
Pretty sure that the brightest light (bar the moon) in the sky for the past few weeks is actually Jupiter, look to the bottom right of the moon. Saying that, the answer to this is usually Venus
Jupiter is visible but due S around NOW as I type it's details are Ra 23h 44m Dec 3deg 03'. It rises at mid-day and sets at 23:35 today.
Naznomad - I've just downloaded Stellarium but didn't set my co-ordinates so am in Paris - can I alter it now or will I have to uninstall it? Also can you tell me how to find out what my co-ordinates are?
Google your town with the word soordinates to find where you are (elevation too)

Enter those details in Stellarium and tick the ''use as default' box, then the 'add to list' button.
fff ...* coordinates
... or use this http://www.satsig.net/maps/lat-long-finder.htm

Find yourself on the map and there you are.
Thanks - will do :)
Sorry it's me again NozNomad. I've found my latitude and longitude but can't find elevation. If I knew what elevaton meant in this instance it might help. Can you explain?
It means how far above sea level you are. Have you got Google Earth? If so, hover the cursor over your house and at the bottom it will give you lat, long and elev.
Thanks sddsddean. I have got Google Earth so will do that. Thanks.
my maid thinks the klingons are coming
A non-scientific answer but the bright planet visible in the evening for the last few weeks is Jupiter but the one in the morning is Venus.
Did you try to register LadyEyresandgraces but it wouldn't fit?
The ISS is due over uk again starting 28th dec 6 40pm for a 1 minute sighting then on 29th at 5 32pm. I will be posting again nearer the time to remind people .
This is why I love AB! Woke up early (again! must be excited about something!) Let the cat out and noticed a really bright star in the sky south east direction, googled it and the things I found were telling me it was Jupiter but it was in the wrong direction, came on here found this thread almost straight away to discover it is Venus. Excellent!

That stellarium is brill btw i had forgotten I had it on my computer!! Dóh! :o)
