laptop saying to change battery

i have a HP Compaq laptop approx 2 1/2 years old. If i remove the AC adaptor within seconds the screen goes blank, even though there is sufficient charge in the charger. Upon putting the AC adaptor back in, i then get a pop up saying, change the battery, etc. Not sure what is going on here, do i need to change the battery or is there another problem that i am missing, thank you for your help

The average useful life of a battery in a laptop is 1 year, so I guess it probably need changing.
