How do instant shoe shiners work? Do they deposit something on the shoe or strip off a layer somehow? What chemical is used?

I'd guess it coats the leather with a thin layer of a shiny polymer.
You can`t beat a good `spit & polish` job like they do in the army on the toe-caps, takes hours but worth it.

Silicon is a non-metallic element; silicone is any of the organic compounds of that element and could be part of the polymer I mentioned above, but not necessarily.
