1 million uninsured on the road it says?
how can you tax the car without a valid insurance certificate and an mot, not possible on paying your car tax on line thats for sure
so someone's slipping up if you can get away with it at the p.o
or does that mean there's over 1 million untaxed un-mot'd cars on the road as well

You can cancel your insurance anytime and keep the certificate. It can also run out before the tax is up as can the MOT
Nothing wrong with either your maths/logic, as usually cars without insurance will not have a legal tax disk, although the car will dsiplay a "valid" disk. The registered keeper has a legal responsibility to insure & tax their car, however if the person either can't/won't insure the car, then either precludes the other....

i realize that but i would have though there would be some kind of safe guard
Johnk, suggest you look at sect 165 Road Traffic Act, as the insurance certificate is logged with DVLA/PN, which in conjunction with ANPR, means removal of car, & poss crushing...
Most uninsured cars are not taxed either. Or if they are then they where insured at the time.

There is a safe guard, you cannot tax an uninsured car.

Most of the cars you refer too are not registered to the driver and are basically uneverything. They'll never irradicate it completely but plod's cars are getting fitted with plate readers and they are confiscating thousands of cars a week.

There is now also a new law that means a car must be insured (or sorned) even if it's not being driven.
I thought that was always the case R1...
Too many soft sentences for reoffenders. 3 strikes and out - 10 years inside. Wont be doing it then.
No ummmm, it only had to be insured on the road before. Now even parked in the drive it must be insured.

Oh...so you can't sorn a car parked in the drive?
yes you can sorn, I was talking about insurance.
If it's sorned then it doesn't need insurance, otherwise it does
Well I thought that was always the case...sorn or taxed & insured.
up to recently it was ok to have a car parked on your drive uninsured. Now it is not unless it is sorned.
I suppose, as I've never had a drive, it's not something I've ever thought about too deeply :-)
There is an exception to the SORN rule - if the car was last taxed before a certain year (I believe it's 1998, but not sure) then apparently it does not need a SORN.
I think that may be the classic cars exemption, ie pre 1972, they still need a tax disc but it's free.
I was in my local Sainburys this morning and a car was parked in the disabled bay with a "mauve" tax disk from November 2010.

I usually write the details down and send details to the DVLA (you can do it online, in fact you can check if any car is insured online as well).

But I had no pen and paper handy so cvould not do it this time.

Plenty of untaxed / uninsured cars on the road. Many people buy cheap cars at auctions, pay by cash, never register it with DVLA, and just drive round untaxed / uninsured till they are caught, then just abandon the car.

Reporting unlicensed cars at DVLA site:

As i understand it, the only obstacle to resolving this is police resources and focus.

As Geezer says the technology is there to detect the vehicles as they drive past.

However, I guarantee there are police cars right now driving round or parked up in our cities with their 'number plate reading illegal-car alarms' going off by the minutes - whether they are doing anything about them is another matter!
they like to use their technology after midnight on a Monday night it would seem, I got followed by 3 police cars last night over a 5 mile journey! They were all parked up then took off to follow me before heading off else where!!
