It depends on the insurer. When you were taking out the policy was it stated that receipts would be needed in the event of any claim?

i cant find anything saying that receipts would be needed in the policy
youve surely answered your own question

Youve been asked for receipts. You have none.

The insurance co. will need to know why (gift etc) and then may ask for proof of ownership (photos of you with said gear is a good one)

The fact you "lost" some gear will be looked into - was it stolen etc, or were you just careless and left it somewhere

Insurance companies are all different, so you will be better of speaking to their claims advisors and they will advise how to proceed
the people to ask should be the people who will be making the decision - the insuracne providers
They may not insist on receipts when it comes to the crunch.
Maybe it's a tactic that causes some fraudulent claimants to back off.
But it's best to keep receipts or expensive items.
Were these specifically insured as an extension to your policy?
