Insurer X sends renewal notice advising premium will be £650 -this includes proof of 8 years NCB.
I go on price comparison website and insurer X comes up with £450 (prices range from £400 with other insurers). I'd be quite happy to stick with X at £450-do I simply click through, take out policy under ref 1234, cancel renewal under ref 5678 and send the proof of NCB from policy 5678 back to the insurer?

I had to same problem, my renewal quote was £485 but the same company was £265 on a comparison site. I phoned the company and told them what I had found and they immediately agreed to renew at the cheaper price.
They are just robbing b@rstards , they rely on the fact that a lot of people just do not bother to shop around and just pay what they ask, it is called...

Perhaps but why stay with the shower that is trying to rip you off? I have a different insurer every year and my premium is noticably cheaper than it was 3 years ago!
So much for rewarding loyal customers!
Quite the reverse Hopkirk! Loyalty is openly punished. The insurers quote low to get punters on board then hike the premium after a year in the hope that apathy will let them get away with it. The comparison sites and the net generally have changed the way the insurers work. As humble punters we must optimise too! I saved a hundred quid by adding the Mrs as a named driver last time, can't imagine why that made it less of a risk!
Not just car insurance, either - I change home insurance every couple of years.

Most insurers add a percentage every year, hoping you won't bother and this is cumulative - a 10% increase doubles your premium after about 7 years!
Kayless, it may have indicated to them that you were a respectable married man rather than a boy racer.

As for "why stay with the shower that is trying to rip you off?" Because they're the cheapest would be an answer.
But they wern't the cheapest where they?
"(prices range from £400 with other insurers)"
Car insurance sometimes makes no sense. Kayless is right ..you must change every year to get a good deal.Have just changed wifes car...value has gone up by £42000 and the insurance by just £160
It must be a sign of getting old.

Update. X refused to renew policy 5678 at £450 but was happy to let me take out policy 1234 for £450 . They accepted policy 5678 as NCB proof.

Must be some logic somewhere!
