There are a few independent stores I know who make a charge for chip and pin use, 50 or 60p. Assuming they are allowed legally, are they also allowed to choose the rate?

and was meant to be in "Law" doh....I'll get me coat...
the shop gets charged per transaction, bigger shops etc can swallow this cost but smaller retailers can't or won't. it is leagal to do, but you have to tell the person before you put the charge through. not sure about the rate amount
Yes they can but I would shop elsewhere and tell them why.

They do get charged for taking cards but they get charged for banking cheques as well, and it must be safer and easier not to have a huge amount of cash on the premises that need to be banked.

Thanks guys; yeah hc I did think that but was desperate and only shop around grrrr rip offs make me so cross !!
As long as they inform you upfront, they can levy any charge they like. They are simply trying to dissuade you from using your card.
