Cancelling car insurance Direct Debit
4 Answers
For the past couple years I have been with Coverbox for my car insurance. For a number of reasons have changed that this year. I contacted them advising that I do not wish to renew the policy once it expires at midnight on the 15th May.
I was told that their accounts dept would be made aware and would be instructed to cancel the direct debit I have with them. The customer service advisor told me to check and make sure the DD was cancelled closer to when the funds would normally be debited.
I bank online and can see all of my direct debits and this one is still showing as active. Money has been collected on the 15th and 18th of the month before now so I don't know exactly when the next payment will come out. I can actually cancel the DD by pressing a button next to it, but I'm worried if I do I'll be liable if for some reason the policy is prematurely nullified by my doing so.
Is it good practice to advise a customer to 'make sure' the DD is cancelled? Surely if the account/policy holder expresses the wish the account no longer be debited and the policy not renewed it is the responsibility of the company taking the money to ensure they abide by my statement in light of my compliance with the agreement and the policy terms?
