I booked a flight but I didn't book insurance. the flight is for the start of September but I know I am not going now. The airline will not refund the money I paid for the flight.
Is it possible to apply for insurance now and then claim the cost of the flight back that way?
Probably. But wasn't the flight only £60? Minus your insurance premium and the hassle of all the form filling and waiting for the refund etc (if they actually decide top pay out) is it really worth it?
Oops! Put it down to experience, I think you might have to write the expense off. IMO your second idea would fail as the insurance firm will look at the flight confirmation, and subsequent insurance "claim" very suspiciously. ;(

so on the 24th august you want to insure a flight at the beginning of Sept?
I think you might raise suspicions and quite rightly so
Lesson learned perhaps
I've often bought travel insurance very last minute (a pack from Tesco for example where you just pay at the till and they don't have your travel plans)). Will insurance pay out for a flight if you've cancelled yourself by (maybe enforced) choice though? I'm not sure
Also, cancellation cover over covers certain circumstances, such as illness, called for jury service and so on. you would not be covered just because the event has been called of so you've decided not to go.

Of course it is, that's why I never bother with motor insurance - I figure I'll get some after the accident.
