The post refers to 'my'Renault Clio, so it seems that he's seeking to insure his own vehicle (and not just drive his father's). If his father insures that vehicle in his own name, and adds Joey88 as a named driver, they will both be guilty of 'fronting' (or 'fraud by false representation', as the Fraud Act 2006 refers to it). The maximum penalty is 10 years imprisonment (not to mention that most insurers would never insure either of them ever again).
However 'doing it the other way round' is perfectly legal and usually still beneficial. i.e. Joey88 should investigate the effect on his premiums of adding a named driver (such as his father) to his own policy. That can often result in a reduction of around one third.
As Shoota says, 'Pass Plus' is well worth considering.
It's also worth checking out all types of insurance. It's tempting to think that '3rd party only' would be cheapest, with '3rd party, fire & theft' adding a bit more to premiums and 'fully comprehensive' costing most. The reality is that 'fully comp' can often cost LESS than the other types of insurance. (Mine does!).
