Insurance Company Say Can't Repair My Car
the guy who rang today said that as the repair bill would be more than 66% of the cars value, they won't be repairing it and so i can collect it tomorrow and they will pay me the value of the car. I never thought to ask him whether i am still insured to drive my car and whether they are still covering me for it fully comp, i'll ring in the morning but it's bothering me now.

If the car is still drivable ( is this the one with the split bumper?) you can just get it 'patched up' as long as it is not dangerous and keep driving.
The same thing happened to a mate of mine. His car was hit from behind while he was stationary at a junction, the insurance wrote it off and sold it back to him for £50. It was an estate car and the only damage was to the tail gate ( they still wrote it off) he went to the scrap yard and bought another tail gate for £50 and fitted it. Car was just as good as before the crash but he was £800 better off. Passed the next MOT no problem as well.

I think you need to check with your insurer.
If they're saying it's not economically viable to repair it (even though it is repairable), they'll prob write it off with a category C or D.

My insurance company did the same thing. I bought the car back and got a friend (a proper mechanic with his own garage) to repair the car. Someone came out to inspect the car to make sure it had been repaired properly, etc ...... saved myself a bit of dosh :)
