Changing Car Registration From French To Uk
Hi, appear to be in a 'Catch 22' situation here and need advice.
We have an originally English registered car (know original Reg. No.) which someone else moved to France and registered there. We bought it there with French Reg. - it is, of course, R-hand drive.
Now back in UK we want to re-register it. We have a UK certificate of conformity, the UK M.O.T. is tomorrow, the headlights have been changed. All in order, in fact. Problem: the DVLA requires UK insurance (we have until end Sept. on the French insurance) and we cannot find an insurer - they all require a UK registration.
The MOT is being done on the chassis number. The DVLA leaflet says that there are insurances available on the same basis, but we can't find any.
Please, does anyone know a company which does this?
As a second question, we are also being told that, although we both went out to France with full no-claims bonuses (accepted in France) and we have had no claims since then, we must lose our no-claims bonuses on re-registration. This seems not only unfair, but grossly inefficient.
Advice would be very much welcomed, thank you. Feeling dizzy with spinning in circles!

Thanks, ubasses, today it looks as if we have managed to fix some insurance for my Renault Megan - so we will have a legal car to drive in a month's time.
It really is very stressful. I am really very grateful, you get caught up in this manic world. It is actually easier in France, would you believe!
Next comes Mr J2's beloved BMW series 3 (one more year and it will be a classic - he's a car buff) - they all seem to think he's an 82 yr-old madman likely to be racing around the country (the quotes are for more than the car is worth!).
Anyway, thanks again, at least we'll be legally mobile. :o) xx

For an old car the insurance is always more than the car is worth. This is because the main cost in a claim is not the cost of the car, but the cost of potential payouts for personal injury , which can be in the £millions.
You can do as much damage to a person with a £300 banger as you can with a £250,000 super car.

Very interesting EDDIE, I can understand that. It seems such a shame (to say the least) that the people driving do not any longer seem to be taken into account. It's the whole computerisation thing as in the rest of life - a huge lack of individual contact and understanding and the supremacy of categorisation. Terrible! Thanks anyway, I now know what I shall be kicking against!
