When I relocated to my present home last September I rang all the firms etc who I pay by direct debit each month but, somehow I omitted to inform Halifax who I have 2 policies with.one for home contents and the other for the outside. I've put in a claim for new kitchen flooring and carpet in the hall all were ruined by my dishwasher which has been leaking due to it being connected wrong. The person I spoke to told me I could claim but Legal and General the underwriter's disputed it today as I failed to inform them of my change of address last September. If I cancelled my insurances would I be refunded? TIA.

No.

However you should be claiming against the plumber who installed the dishwasher (assuming, of course, that you didn't do it yourself!). He/she is responsible for the damage caused through his/her error, so he/she (or his/her insurer) should pay for it.
I can't see any grounds for them to refund you. It was your mistake and as most policies are annual you'd be expected to pay a penalty for early cancellation anyway.

Sorry, it has been a very expensive lesson for you.

Okay folks, Thanks for your inputs:-( kat.
just on a side note- when you moved to the new address did you take out insurance again? and the Halifax insurance was on the old property that you sold?

If you sold the property, but were still paying a monthly Direct Debit, then you should be able to obtain a refund if you provide Proof of Sale documentation - an admin fee normally applies.

Thats how it works with the insurance company I work for, but all will differ - the best bet is to contact Halifax and ask them..and request no more premiums are taken if you still have an old policy running
