Gruesome Goo - A Job For The Insurance Company ?

The other day I noticed something sticky in the dirty-washing tub, but thought it must be a dab of syrup or jam, but would all come out in the wash anyway. Next I noticed that pillowcases, which never come near food, were also sticky. I investigated further, only to find that some long-forgotten item of transparent gel had burst and the goo had gone everywhere. I threw everything into the washbasin and tried to rinse them, but that was when I found out that the sticky doesn’t wash off. Hands, clothes, basin, taps and laundry bucket were liberally smeared. I had to go down to the garage to get solvents, mainly white spirit ( no, the commercial sticky-stuff-remover was hopeless) with the result that doorknobs, handles, cupboards, garage door and more items were also smeared. I managed to get the stuff off my hands and get some rubber gloves, but they, too, immediately got mucky. Liberal doses of solvents seem to have worked on a few items, which I threw into the wash to get rid of the smell. When it came to ironing, I discovered that small blobs of the stuff had escaped the solvents, and were stickying up the ironing board, and the iron, too. Unfortunately, some of my best silks and cashmeres were in that laundry bucket, and even now they stink of solvents. So does the whole house.
Should I just have thrown everything into a black sack to give to the insurance company ? My house insurance is fairly comprehensive, but I am ( was) very fond of those silks and cashmeres.

You could have tried the insurance company but I bet they would have found a way out of paying.They would want to know how it happened what it was and that it was not deliberate. You do not seem to know yourself what it was so how do you expect the insurance company to pay?

I doubt that the insurance company would be interested. I would track down whoever threw their dirty wash in the bin with a tube of “gel” in the pocket and extract replacement money from them!
