Central Heating Boiler & Radiator Insurance
Recently had a problem with our Worcester boiler, it’s about 3year old, so think we had better get some insurance on it. Can anyone recommend a good provider. Thinking about Scottish Power atm as we are with them anyway. It would be £15.75 a month but no excess for unlimited call outs and an annual service too. Also Home Rescue similar cover for slightly less (just a £1 tho-duh) but wondered if anyone on AB has any other suggestions please.

It has been regularly serviced by a gas safe retired friend who unfortunately (for me anyway) has now gone to live in France and of course I don’t have any documentation TWR. not grumbling tho’ he has been a gem for years, bless him.It is a gas boiler Tuvok so glad about that. I know that S.P has a poor reputation for customer service knokavacca but sorry to hear about your troubles with them. I think I will probably find out what exactly Worcester offers with their insurance. Thanks again everyone for replying, I knew I could depend on AB, rosy x
My advice is to be your own boiler insurer – that way you will not have to pay for TV advertising and the army of staff employed to administer the scheme.
I believe it is possible to have a combi-boiler replaced for the order of £1500 (cost of the boiler and installation) – at £15.75/month, you could have the boiler replaced every 8 years.
Having moved into our house just over 2 years ago, with the boiler requiring no attention – I already have more than £400 in the repair kitty.
I also have concerns about some of the companies running such schemes – using them to claim that your boiler is beyond economic repair; then recommending that you have a new model installed by them (not covered by the insurance).

Hymie is quite right. Unless you are extremely unlucky you would be far better off putting whatever you plan to pay in premiums in your own "insurance" kitty. The same applies to just about any cover for domestic items.
To figure out why this is true just consider it from the insurers' point of view. They take enough in premiums to repair all the boilers on their books that break down. They also take enough for all their overheads, a bit for their shareholders' dividend and a bit of retained profit besides. Unlike (say) motor insurance, the upper limit of cost you may be required to bear is a known quantity (the cost of a full replacement) and you will have to bear that cost at some point anyway as the boiler will be too old to insure. Insuring it now is simply not financially worthwhile.
