I don't see why he should lose his No Claims Bonus as he hasn't made a claim. His insurance will, however, almost certainly be heavily loaded.
I think you'll find it's a no claims discount, not a no convictions discount.

Having said that, they will load his premium considerably for an Excess Alcohol offence and in reality he'll probably be just as badly off as if he had lost his no claims discount.

I myself am of the opinion once a driver gets a dd conviction then they should never be allowed on the road again (only on a bicycle). I am probably alone in this point of view.
Or just alone.
I don't think you're alone at all, coldstream.

Personally I would allow a drink-driver one chance to reform (getting very liberal!) but a second offence would see a lifetime ban.

As an aside it is very, very unusual for a driver to be banned (for any offence) for life. In fact, a disqualification of five years is unusual and a ban of longer than that very unusual indeed.
It's still applicable but it will be protecting his old premium not the considerably nigher post DD premium. Expect a huge rise.
DD is pretty bad but the new kid on the block is much worse, texting.
