Essentially we are being pushed into using electric cars, inevitably that is going to drastically reduce revenue from duty. Replacing VED and fuel duty with road pricing is the fairest and most practical way of doing that. Discuss....

ED can you move this to motoring.

for years people have been saying VED is unfair because it takes no account of usage, well road pricing will.
As does the current duty and VAT on fuel. VED is the equivalent of the daily charge for gas and electricity; it covers the cost of maintaining the system which is necessary even when it isn't being used. Yes, I know taxes paid by motorists aren't ring-fenced.
Finance for 2nd hand electric is not straight forward, ownership/lease of battery complicates hire purchase and PCP deals. All the lenders i use shy away from full electric, no one wants the reputation for being the "go to" electric car lender. Big test coming with UBER switching to full electric requirements next year. Yep, i work in car finance
I suspect it will be VED plus mileage. The VED also keeps the paperwork up to date and to a degree ensures the authorities know where the vehicle is.

It's going to happen soon. Whether or not road pricing comes in alongside fuel duty (have to pay both) remains to be seen. I am sure this would be the preference of the Prime Minister and her husband to keep the green policies going.

Jealousy much? (No I dont own one). This has to be the most rediculous thing I have read in ages. Did you read the OP? 4x4 wont be charged any more per mile than a 'mini' so why would it put them off? Indeed if they replaces fuel duty with per mile they could end up better off!

And what about electric 4x4's? Hate them too?
How are they going to work out how many miles you drive ?
bobbie22 - vehicles are already fitted with a 'meter' that records how many miles the vehicle has travelled, it's called the 'odometer'. Mileage readings from it are recorded at each MOT test.
They can't use that Etch. Too easy to alter.

I can see a lot of anti big brother protests if we are all forced to have black boxes fitted. The government would have the ability to track every move you make.
Why do you say "too easy to alter", Hopkirk? You could say the same about gas or electricity meters. Yes, I did once have need to disconnect the drive to the speedometer from the gearbox, but it involved either getting under the car or fiddling around behind the dashboard. Whereas plugging an 'electronic gizmo' into a USB port to disable or spoof the 'GPS tracking' system that some people are suggesting...
don't modern cars have electronic speedometer/odometer - doing away with a mechanical cable?
If only the odometer were used, putting on larger diameter tyres would produce a lower reading on it.
So how easy are they to "alter", davebro? I thought that over the years sppedometers/odometers had been made more tamper-proof.
