Hi folks, have you ever come across a famous person by accident? I've seen Bob Mortimer in a McDonald's early one day in London, didn't want to disturb him as it seemed inappropriate. Have you spoke to them and how did they react?

Yes, late Fifties, Great Yarmouth, Jimmy Savile in seafront café - didn't approach him as he was dunking biscuits in his tea.

I passed Sean Connery in the street one day, I said hello because he looked familiar.  He said hello and smiled back.

Several, among them Lulu at a party, and Michael Caine who was with his sound man late at night on an empty Charing Cross station.  He looked at me and smiled, waiting for me to say something.  I didn't.  I think it amused us both.

 

I met a famous actress abroad and didn't have a clue who she was.  We spent quite a bit of time together before someone told me.  We're still friends.

I bought William Hartnell a drink in a Suussex pub a long time ago, before he came the first Dr Who. I recognised him from his appearance in the first carry on film, Carry on sergeant.

I saw Australian former tennis player, Pat Rafter, outside Harrods. He didn't stop to chat 🤷🏻‍♀️ 

I saw Norman Wisdom in an M&S food store. Husband was chatting with him for a while. 
 

Tony Slattery in a wine bar. I tripped over his bag and he said "I'm so sorry. Let me move that out of your way."

Yes, I passed Patrick Moore in Reading, DR Phil Hammond in Bath, Richard Coles in Skipton, Phil Harding in Salisbury. I didn't speak to any of them as I think they're entitled to their privacy when not "on duty".

I was on a train with my daughter when she noticed an actress from Emmerdale.  As I don't watch it, I had no idea who she was. My daughter didn't speak to her.

I met Patrick Stewart at Cape Canaveral once .

We got chatting and he said he was on his way to take command of the New Enterprise

All replies are fascinating so thanks!, who naome, can't you say? we won't tell! I guess most of us use common sense and leave famous people alone. They must get annoyed at their catchphrases being flung at them. Best to let them know we appreciate their work without feeling we're entitled to act as though we know them personally.

Oh, I've met lots of famous people; - as I was only saying the other day to King Charles.

Patrick Stewart is a good one, I remember him saying when he first went to become Captain Picard, he met George Takei on a flight and talking about Star Trek he only then realised what an icon it was, so must have been around that time Bazile.

My stepson met Paul McCartney and his then wife Heather in an airport lounge. She seemed willing to give an autograph but he said No. Sarah Ferguson was also there and was very lovely.

Many years ago, when I lived in upstate New York, I saw the movie musical actor Howard Keel on the local bus. He was known for Kiss Me Kate, Annie Get Your Gun and number of other well known musicals of the 50s...he was retired by then. 

Around the same time, I met the actress Gretchen Wyler at her dog and cat rescue...my then partner and I had decided to rehome our nervous dog as we were moving back to Manhattan. So not totally accidental.
