Borrowed a friends car, he had fully comprehensive insurance and said i was insured to drive it. Stopped by police, routine check asked to produce. turns out i am not insured, in magistrates court june 2nd. also thought worse case scenario i would be covered by own bike or van insurance bur this does not cover me

can you advise

you might be covered from your own policies,but it would only be third party,check with your insurance company,third party is enough if all you have done has been stopped

Some policies cover all drivers (usually aged over 25 or something similar), but these are usually commercial policies used for company vehicles.
Like NORMANTHEDOG says, unless your policy implicitly states that you can drive other vehicles, you're uninsured
