I have been insured for 10 years as a named driver on my wifes policy. I am about to purchase my own car and take out insurance in my name. Will I be able to say I have 10 years No claims discount (as it was as a 2nd named driver on my wifes policy) or do I have to start with nil ncd

You will not be able to say you have any NCD.

You have to start from nil - but if you shop around you may be able to get some form of introductory discount to make up for this.

There is one company who advertise on TV that are giving the same no claims bonus to the named second driver, but apart from that, no.
i think direct line will give you a ncd for being a named driver.
wont hurt the bank account to give them a call.
