Am currently selling me house. I have just recieved a letter saying that I have to pay 140 to norwich union as apparenly the property is on the boundary of a parish. whcih does have a potential chancel repair liability.

Do I have to pay this or the people buying my house?

I think you will find your buyer is expecting you to fork out for this.
This is a single premium, chancel repair liability insurance. It protects your buyer in the event that the local parish church invokes a clause that makes parishioners liable for repairs under some circumstances. Their solicitor is (correctly) covering this angle.
There's some general info about this 'problem' here.

Thanks bulidersmate. Ive said to my solicitor to tell them that we are not paying..So i'll wait and see what they come back with. Only I can't understand if it's them going to be living and buying the house why they can't pay for it?
Well its because your house has been offered for sale 'as seen', and they have made an offer which you have accepted. But all deals are subject to contract. Then the solicitors and surveyors get involved (well less so with surveyors because of HIPS) and they find something unexpected that they want put right before they buy. You are prefectly within your rights to refuse to pay and then they will have to decide to take it on the chin, pull out or try and negotiate with you.
That's why I said, I think they will be expecting you to pay.
just pay it, its easier than haggling, its nothing compared to the house price. I`ve known sales to collapse cos no-one will pay! be the bigger person, u`ll feel really good too,

Thanks dolly pond think your right. But the pennies here and there are really starting to add up. They have also paid a fair bit under the asking price aswell.
