hi can you claim on ur contents insurance if you add a power cut and it broke an electrical item

You will have to read your policy to find out what cover you have. With mine, it is not covered by Contents Standard Cover, but it is covered if the policyholder selected Contents Additional Cover.
The exclusion clause with the Standard Cover says 'any loss or damage by mechanical or electrical breakdown or failure'.
Why claim? if the power cut was responsible (rather than say a faulty fuse in the item) then claim from the power company responsible.
