drinking with no insurance but unaware

my Boyfriend was driving his works car to work when he was stopped by the police who claimed that there was no insurance on the car. My boyfriedm was adament that there was insurance as he had been told by his employers of such. The police officer gave him a seven day producer to get the docs to them before this time.
When he asked his employer for the insurance documents it showed that the policy ran out 4 days before he was stopped by the police. Noe he has to wait for the court day to come through.

Any ideas what the penalty will be for him although he was totally unaware he was driving without insurance.
