Does home contents insurance cover a property or an individual? Could I claim on a policy that is in my flatmate's name?
Thanks

i think it will depend on whether the insurers are aware its a shared accomodation.
its both - ie it covers an individuals property. the policy will cover the property belonging to her in the normal course of things, so for example if the house burnt down, and she was insured and you werent, the insurance would pay out for her things that were lost in the fire, not yours.
Your flatmate's home contents policy will only cover items that belong to her. You will need to take your own policy for your own home contents.
