tracing a mobile number

can police trace a mobile number? even if its not contract

someone damaged my car and has given me false information, the only thing i know is correct is his phone number

what happens if he gets away with it? do i have to claim on my own insurance

As far as i know the number can be traced if its used maliciously for calls or texts.Dont know how you can prove that the numbers relevant to the damage?

Yes the police can do alsorts of wonderful things with mobiles, including finding the owner of it. HOWEVER, it has to be proportionate to the incident/offence being investigated. Assuming there was no serious injury, I suspect not in this case.
