I was involved in an accident that was my fault and I had not declared the 3 points on my license, when the insurance company contacted me about the accident and they asked if I had any points, i said yes and they said I should of told them when the points were added (i took policy before gaining points). They just said to me that they needed to adjust my premium accordingly and that was that. But I suppose it just depends on your circumstance... I would keep just keep quiet if I were you, just like the time I had an accident which was not my fault but my MOT had run out by 1 day... its up to you...
In fairness, it never ceases to amaze me just how many people DON'T comprehend that you have to notify your insurance company of points on your licence. I have three points on my licence now and I recall when I got them last year discussing with a number of people about it and how I'd notified my insurance company and was waiting to hear how much extra it would cost me.

At least three or four looked at me in shock and revealed that it had never occurred to them to tell their insurance company when they got points. One of them is a university graduate who runs his own professional practice! It's simply astounding how many people don't actually realise that points on your licence IS a conviction. Whilst there's no denying that's particularly stupid / niaive on their part, I can't help feeling that there isn't enough emphasis put on this by insurance companies and it's something that does need publicised a lot more to make people realise.
