Who are you insured with? Different insurance have different ways, and can even be different with different policies from the same company.

Phone them up and ask.
Most companies will ask you to get an quote froma carpet company, they will then issue a cheque in that sumto the carpet company. They may ask you to go the carpet shop and chose one, then the insurance company will do the rest. Unfortunatly every company works diff I work for an Insurance company and they will pay many claims in different way, depends on the most cost effective way
We are with Barclays and they told us we had to get our new carpet from Allied, who they called and set up an account for us. They told us the highest amount we could go up to and paid the account when the carpet was fitted. Nice and quick and easy, and reduced the stress at a very upsetting time.
