I bought a sofa from DFS and within a week I had to cancel. The reason why was the sofa we had belonged to my boyfriends mum and dad, but unfortunately his father has passed away. DFS will not cancel it but surely I have a cooling off period. What are my rights?

Forgive my possible ignorance, but I don't understand how the passing of a partner's parent affects your need for a sofa? Either way, it seems a moot fact.
Did you instigate the contract by entering their store and picking a sofa? Was it via the internet (if they offer that) or did a sales person call at your house/over the phone?

Have you asked this question on here before? It seems familiar.
I'm a bit puzzled as to why the death means you no longer need it- unless you are saying your dad had lent it you but no longer needs it back so you're keeping it. Anyway....
If you simply purchased it in the shop then the answer is no- there is no cooling off period. Most firms would have said the same I expect.
Some companies might refund the money as a goodwill gesture if the order hasn't got very far but no doubt DFS will say someone has started to build the sofa.
Why not make an offer- ask for your money back less 100 to cover any costs DFS have incurred.
If necessary sell it on ebay.
