People want insurance....

If we could afford it, we would all insure against everything and anything, wouldn/t we? I recently had to quit work due to ill health - I am now on benefits (ESA) which pays me just over £64 a week - after paying bills (Gas. leccy. TV licence) and buying luxuries (food) I have nothing left for insurance. This is not a plea for sympathy, but surely this means vulnerable people have no comeback if the worst happens. It does happen. I was working full time, and got burgled 4 times in one year - eventually I was refused insurance. What chance do people on benefits have, if by some chance they are robbed of their possesions?

well in your example, perhaps people should insure against income protection in ill health while they are working/
People on benefits shouldn't have anything worth stealing.

I cannot believe those cruel, dismissive answers - I have worked all my life (I am 56 now) - I live on my own, so although well paid, I found it hard to save. Now on benefits, as I said, due to ill health, I find it difficult to get insurance, to protect EVERYTHING I HAVE WORKED FOR !!!!! Obviosly, the 2 morons that replied, never expect to get sick - I really hope they don't.

And, incidentally, I did have PPI - but when you try to claim against it, you're screwed. No-one will ever meet the criteria.

well i certainly didn't mean to sound moronic or rude - i am just saying that if you are saying you should insure against everythiung, then income protection is a good one, especially as it would prevent people finding themselves in your situation. I certainly wish i had had health insurance/income protection before i became ill

There was nothing moronic in suggesting people should have a permanent health policy, as in the event of illness it would pay 75% of salary until retirement.

This is simply prudence, is it not?

There are people who live in a world of their own and don't see what goes on in the real world. They tend to have "another view" to most other folk, and think nothing about putting others down. I hope your health improves soon and that you can sort out some sort of insurance cover for the things you have.
The trouble with income protection insurance is that it is relatively expensive, so if you are not in a higher income bracket or if you have have pre existing health conditions it probably is not an option. I am sorry to say I have no solution to your dilemma smart1 - just offer my best wishes and the hope that things will improve for you.
Unfortunately because of your history regarding claims on insurance (assuming you did each time) this can affect any future insurance you may get, at least in the initial term. I would recommend shopping around, though, and once 3 years has passed some insurers do not require you to declare any previous claims older than this thus not affecting your premium.
Contact your local council to see if they have anything they can assist you with and shop around for gas / lec/ food (if you can) sometimes you can save a bundle. Good luck.
