Recently a member of the AnswerBank team found themselves faced with a renewal quote for their car insurance which was More Expensive than their previous premium. This is despite an additional year of No Claims Bonus and a completely clean driving licence.

Have any AnswerBankers faced a similar renewal hike, and what did you do when faced with it?

I have 25 years no claims and last year my policy was £510 (expensive enough) but today I got my renewal quote for £602. bloody hell! it's with Esure.

can anyone recommend an insurance company? is it wise to use the price comparison sites?
sara, call Adrian Flux.

I use them, dont know if mines likely to go up this year, its not due yet, but they are pretty good at price matching or beating
thanks red, I'll google it x
I don't know about "unfairly" received a more expensive quotation - insurers' rates go up for everyone based on their claims experience, the question is worded rather oddly. Why is that unfair?
http://www.adrianflux.co.uk sorry i forgot the link
Try EGG as well Sara. That was the cheapest for us...
Surprising Marks & Spencer were best for me this year, but I've only got a little car.
Don't mention Egg, ummmm. I've had enough on the subject of eggs today as a result of the AB Editor's Egg Riddle .
am on the phone to Adrian Flux! will update...
My renewal qoute from Swinton, was over £112 more for this year, than last.I have the maximum allowed no claims bonus. When I queried it,I was told that it was the cheapest
possible.I went on Go Compare,found a company called One Call,who quoted £150
less than I had originally paid.
Needless to say,I changed to them and had the greatest of pleasure in cancelling the Swinton insurance.
OH has been with One Call, quite pleased with them.
i was with swinton for 1 year then they hiked the premium up - so i went elsewhere as i do almost every year with car - but bike quote this year couldn't be beaten £83 full comp
lovely , everyone else wanted at least £140.
so......... Adrian Flux, £362!!

but.. my original Esure quote includes breakdown cover and monthly payment premium, and I forgot to ask the nice lady, lol.

I'll see if I can track down One Call next :o)
Hi boxtops.
Glad to hear that.
I really really hope not,but has he ever had to use them after an accident or a
roadside breakdown ?
One Call £527, no breakdown cover or monthly premiums :o/
sara, flux's breakdown cover is £40 and has been good when ive used it.

They also do something called Angel assist or something which is legal cover. Theyve dealt with my no fault claim with ease.

Oh and a key safe policy they do looks interesting. It insures every set of keys you have, and if you lose them they will replace every lock that the keys relate to, car, house etc

I dontknow what they charge for monthly payments as i pay mine in one go.
My Motorbike insurance has reduced every year, I have had it for 9 years Kawasaki 500 KLE, this year it was £69 Fully comp !

I always check Compare.com for quotes.

As I am a member of the I.A.M. I got a quote from Select insurance, that is the one The I.A.M. recommend, their quote was £120 more than one from Compare.com, when I told them they immediately dropped to the Compare.com quote so there is nothing special with being a member of the I.A.M. to get low insurance costs unless you fight for a lower price!

Another insurer would not give me a discount but would give it if I had done a + pass course !

All insurance companies just want to take the maximum they can get out of you, so shop around !

I used to be with Saga but their premium was getting to be a joke so I tried DirectLine and they were much cheaper. If it hadn't been, I'd have tried a comparison site. But do make sure the quote you get is like-for-like if you want to compare prices properly.
PS as to the original question, prices always go up; it's just inflation, same as anything else. If I was still paying the £3-6s-2d I was paying in 1906 I'd be very happy...
