Hi,

My Mum is really struggling to get travel insurance that will cover her ill health. Her cheapest quote so far is over £300 and she has telephoned so many insurance companies who claim to cover ill-health people, it's untrue! So many of them just dismiss her completely!

Her conditions are:

High blood pressure
High cholesterol
Stroke history
TIA (small stroke history)
Diabetes
Type 2 diabetes

I understand that she is a poorly woman and it doesn't look good, but she hasn't been admitted to hospital in over 4 years and isn't under any consultants for her conditions.

Can anyone help?

Thanks :)

Sorry that was supposed to read Epilepsy and Type 2 diabetes - not diabetes listed twice :)
you don't mention where she is going or for how long or how old she is, however, she is lucky to have someone willing to cover her at all in my opinion. I recently tried to get insurance to cover me for a four niight stay in Jersey. I have rheumatoid arthritis and i'm 36 and eventually had to get cover that EXCLUDED anything die to arthritis AND had to pay nearly 50 quid!
Several charities (for disabled people and those with medical problems) include a link to a specialist broker, Able2Travel, on their websites. I know, from the response to similar questions here in the past, that the link has often proved useful to those who are struggling to get travel insurance:

I used ENSLEIGH travel insurance and I have medical conditions. Found them to be reasonable.

Hi thanks for your replies. To clarify, my mother will be travelling to Florida, America in October and is 57 years old.

I find it appalling that nobody seems to be willing to cover her!
I'm sorry but I think that £300 for travel insurance for US with your mother's conditions is very reasonable. With all her conditions the likelihood of her becoming ill must be fairly high and the cost of any treatment in the US would be enormous.
Have you tried the company I suggested in your post , in the Insurance section ?

Hi Berti, I forgot I had posted in the insurance category too! Thanks for your link, I will pass the number on to her! :)

I understand that she is a risk having had such bad previous conditions... but all of these companies claiming to cover "ill-health people" are, quite frankly, liars! Out of 14 that she called, two were willing to cover her. She will pay however much she is asked to pay in the end, that's not the problem. But since she isn't computer literate, I thought I would ask online to see if anyone had any words of wisdom or useful links.

Thanks for those passed on :)

I know you say it's over £300 but some travel insurance companies were wanting to charge my father over £1600 for his insurance. He went to AllClear in the end and got his for £680. Still expensive but at least he could go on holiday and that was only to Benidorm. AllClear are something to do with Aviva I think but for the older traveller. If you ask the insurance companies about the prices they charge they will say there is more chance of them having to pay out and pay out higher and that especially applies to the states.

Yeah I get that, honestly I do. It just doesn't make sense to me that these places claim to insure ill-health people... when 12 out of 14 don't! Does that mean if they all took that attitude my Mum shouldn't go away, ever?

I'm on my high horse about it... just ignore me! :)
Let us know how much , she eventually has to pay and whether the company i suggested , are able to offer cover for a cheaper price than the £ 300
Do try' Mia' for an excisting heart condition to USA we paid £145 in March for two of us to trave. M&S wanted over £1,000. Dont think about not insuring. Good Luck
