Sick of applying for jobs!

Hi everyone, sorry but this is a rant.

I finished my first year of uni in May and since then I've been looking for part time work over the summer, which I could hopefully continue when I start back at uni late September. (weekend work and occasional days during the week)

Here's my history of applying for jobs so far:
HMV. Went for an interview and never heard anything back despite being told I would.
Adams. Heard nothing.
Cinema. Heard nothing.
Local greengrocers. I'm not flexible enough for part time work, they apparently want someone at their beck and call to work whenever they want at short notice.
Local cafe. Same deal.

There's nothing wrong with my CV, in fact it's pretty good. I only have a month's experience working at Matalan, I was forced to quit due to a car crash... however I have detailed plenty of roles of responsibility etc...

Sorry to go on. I'm just so sick of being knocked back :(

Mate, I know how you feel, I am currently looking for a job, I have just passed my finals for my law degree, but been told that I am underqualified even to work as an office junior!

Its a nightmare I know, and to keep motivated to sell yourself well on application form after application form is difficult, particuarly as you have suffered knock backs. Problem is, people want you to have work experience, but you cant get it until someone gives you a break! All I can suggest is to keep looking, keep your chin up, and perhaps consider volunteering, I know that doesnt help with money, but it will help tremendously with your CV I promise!

Dont apologise for ranting, if you look back I had a similar rant a few days ago, the thread was called 'Things I wish I had known' and I got loads of advice from there if you want to have a look at that. Take care and good luck!

its cr4p isnt it? i went for an interview last week & was told they would call either way monday. i sat there all day like a muppet with my heart pounding (i was literally a bag of nerves all day) & they did not even bother to call. got a letter today to say i did not get the job & to ring if i wanted feedback. i rang & still noone has called me back.
funny thing is i swear the interview went really well (thanks in part to daftpixie- hello dp!).
WHY WONT THEY JUST BL00DY CALL THE IGNORANT S0DS!?!

Hi - jus a suggestion....have you tried temping agencies? You can build up a really good reputation by being reliable and avaliable, doing a few short term jobs, then 'proving' yourself to be a good employee. That's how i started out in my career 5 years ago and i climbed the ladder pretty quick. Also, if you become the good employee referred to - you are more likely to pick and choose later on.....

daftpixie, that's a good idea about volunteering. I'll ask around at my local charity shops! it's hard to keep motivated, and the job centre website is bl00dy difficult at the best of times to navigate which just makes things worse, haha.

muppeteer, at least you got a letter! but it's still shyte being knocked back isn't it. I would've thought a big company like HMV would at least bother, all they have to do is send out a standard "you've not been successful" letter and put my name at the top! At least then I'd know!

angeldraws, I sent my CV off to the main agency here but heard nothing back yet :( I look at their jobs daily (as well as the job centre website) - I wouldn't mind data entry jobs but the ones I see are all crap hours - for example, 5-9pm monday to friday! I may want a job but I want to spend time with my family&friends too! But I'm still looking :)

How about working part-time in a local pub? Many pubs employ people part time behind the bar and it's something you can do whilst at University.

Hi, have you tried the large supermarkets? Not sure if applies to all of them but I know that Tesco actively look for students and the job can usually be transferred to home/uni towns as required. Thet also tell you there and then if you have the job.
Also give time off for exams (unpaid).
Work is mentally undemanding in general so you can use the other half of your brain to concentrate on your studies.
