HGV License
3 Answers
I'm in my early 20's, currently in a low paid office job and I'm looking for a change of career. Been reading in The Sun about the shortage of young HGV drivers and I thought I would look into it a bit more. I've got a full, clean driving license and I really enjoy driving. Is there anyone in the industry that can give me the pros and cons of being a lorry driver? Any suggestions on how to go about getting all the training and how to find a reputable training company? TIA!

Not sure of the details, but you are sponsored by a firm and have to drive for them until you are 21 (and possibly for a minimum time after that). The pros and cons vary a lot depending on what you are doing. I have been an agency driver...which is not too bad, but wasn't brilliantly paid then (lot better now) but take all these ads that say you can earn 600 a week with a pinch of salt! I have been an owner/ driver for 11 years now. Basically in this country you are treated like a piece of sh!t by most warehouses, other drivers etc. On the continent you are treated like a professional. I used to love driving in Germany and Austria (though the French cops are bast@rds!), but as there are so many East European drivers doing continental work now (let alone over here), there are very few jobs to be had. In this country there is a massive driver shortage, but you will have to get used to being in constant hold ups etc. You could put yourself through your test (you have to do a rigid first now before you are allowed to take an artic test), but it can be quite pricey. Google for HGV instruction. Otherwise write to any big transport firms near you. Many will put you through your test as long as you sign up to work for them for 12 months or something.
Personally...I love it!

i have been driving class 1 vehicles for 21 years and have done all sorts of work but not continental. you can earn a decent wage but forget 9to5. i start at 0400 every day and aim to get done by 1400. sometims i do somtimes i don't. the same run can vary wildly in time due to loading unloading problems and stroppy warehouse men(sorry persons). i have been mostly driving for supermarkets for the last 10 years and thats a doddle. most places will want experienced drivers but if you start with a decent agency and tell them what you want out of the job they can usually get you work that suits.
i don't know what you mean by low paid but how many hours do you want to work for a decent wage. i do 45 to 50 hours a week and take home between 340-380 a week for that. you can earn more with an ADR licence.
