Becoming a college lecturer?

I am currently working in a college in a secretarial role however lately i've been thinking about studying to become a lecturer. (I have a degree in politics and social policy). I've been finding the idea of re-training quite daunting though due to a hefty mortgage and also being really scared that I would be out of my depth. Can anyone give me some advice?
